How to limit BOGO and BXGX discounts to identical variants

Learn how to require matching product variants for BOGO and BXGX discounts in Discount Mixer.

Written by Veronica P

The Limit to identical variants only setting controls whether items with different variants can qualify together for a BOGO or BXGX discount.

Enable this setting when the qualifying Buy and Get items must use the same exact variant.

For example, if a shirt is available in different colors and sizes, “Black / Medium” and “Black / Large” are different variants, even though they belong to the same product.

When should you enable this setting?

Enable Limit discount to identical variants only when you want customers to receive the discount only after adding enough units of the same variant.

For example, you can use it for offers such as:

  • Buy one Black / Medium shirt and get another Black / Medium shirt free.

  • Buy two units of the same variant and get the second unit at 10% off.

  • Buy three units of the same size and color to receive the configured reward.

Leave the setting disabled if different variants of the same eligible product should be allowed to qualify together.

Supported campaign configurations

This setting is supported for:

  • BOGO

  • BXGX

It is not supported for BXGY configurations.

The setting is disabled by default.

  2. Go to Select discount type.

How identical-variant matching works

When the setting is enabled, Discount Mixer creates qualifying groups separately for each variant.

Items do not all need to use the same variant across the entire cart. Each variant can form its own valid group when the required quantity is present.

In the following examples:

  • A represents one variant.

  • B represents a different variant of the same eligible product.

  • Each complete pair forms one qualifying group.

Items in the cart

Setting

Result

A + A

Enabled

A + A forms one valid group, and the discount applies.

A + B

Enabled

No valid group is formed because the variants are different.

A + B

Disabled

A + B can form one valid group.

A + A + B

Enabled

A + A forms one valid group. The single B item is not discounted.

A + A + B + B

Enabled

A + A and B + B form two separate valid groups. How many receive the discount depends on the application frequency.

How the application frequency affects valid groups

The campaign’s application frequency determines how many valid groups can receive the discount.

One-time

When One-time is selected, the campaign applies to only one valid group.

For example, with A + A + B + B:

  • A + A forms one valid group.

  • B + B forms another valid group.

  • Only one of these groups receives the discount.

Multiple times (Unlimited)

When Multiple times (Unlimited) is selected, the campaign applies to every complete valid group.

For example, with A + A + B + B:

  • A + A receives the discount.

  • B + B also receives the discount.

Incomplete groups

Items that cannot form a complete identical-variant group do not receive the discount.

For example, with A + A + B:

  • A + A forms one valid group and receives the discount.

  • The single B item does not receive a discount.

In this example, One-time and Multiple times (Unlimited) produce the same result because the cart contains only one complete group.

What customers see in the storefront widget

When Limit discount to identical variants only is enabled, the storefront widget must keep the Buy and Get variants identical.

Customers can use the variant selector to change the Buy variant. When they change it:

  • The Get variant automatically changes to the same variant.

  • The customer cannot select a different Get variant.

  • The widget prevents invalid variant combinations before the customer reaches checkout.

The Buy and Get items use the same variant when identical-variant matching is enabled.

Examples

Same variant

A campaign offers: Buy one shirt and get the second shirt at 10% off.

The customer adds:

  • Black / Medium shirt

  • Black / Medium shirt

The items have the same variant, so they form a valid group and the discount applies.

Different sizes

The customer adds:

  • Black / Medium shirt

  • Black / Large shirt

These are different variants. If Limit discount to identical variants only is enabled, they do not form a valid group and the discount does not apply.

Different colors

The customer adds:

  • Black / Medium shirt

  • Blue / Medium shirt

Although the size is the same, the colors are different. They are therefore different variants, so the discount does not apply when identical-variant matching is enabled.

Multiple identical-variant groups

The customer adds:

  • Two Black / Medium shirts

  • Two Blue / Large shirts

Each pair forms a separate valid identical-variant group.

  • With One-time, only one group receives the discount.

  • With Multiple times (Unlimited), both groups receive the discount.

Why is the discount not applying?

If a BOGO or BXGX discount does not apply, check the following:

  • Confirm that the campaign is active.

  • Confirm that the cart contains the required quantity.

  • Check whether Limit discount to identical variants only is enabled.

  • Confirm that enough units of the same exact variant are in the cart.

  • Check whether the campaign uses One-time or Multiple times (Unlimited).

  • Confirm that the campaign is configured as BOGO or BXGX rather than BXGY.

After making changes, click Save and test the campaign again with both identical and different variants.
