Example campaign
The following example is used to compare all three rules:
Tier 1: Buy 3 items → 10% off + Gift A
Tier 2: Buy 4–5 items → Gift B
Tier 3: Buy 6 or more items → 20% off
A customer buys 7 items. This means the customer has reached Tier 3 and has also unlocked the gifts from the earlier eligible tiers.
The customer receives the 20% discount from Tier 3. The selected Free gift application rule determines which gifts are added.
Include all eligible tier gifts
Customers receive every free gift unlocked across eligible tiers.
Choose this option when you want customers to keep all the gifts they unlock as they progress through the campaign tiers.
Result for 7 items
The customer receives:
20% off
Gift A from Tier 1
Gift B from Tier 2
Although Tier 3 does not include a gift, the gifts unlocked in the earlier tiers are still added.
Apply only the highest qualifying tier gift
Customers receive only the free gift from the highest qualifying tier. Gifts from lower tiers are not added.
Choose this option when each higher tier should replace the rewards offered by the previous tiers.
Result for 7 items
Tier 3 is the customer’s highest qualifying tier.
The customer receives:
20% off
Gift A and Gift B are not added because they belong to lower tiers. Tier 3 does not include a free gift.
Apply highest tier + last eligible gift
Customers receive the discount from the highest qualifying tier and the free gift from the most recent eligible tier that includes a gift.
Choose this option when you want to prevent gift stacking while still providing one previously unlocked gift if the highest tier does not contain one.
Result for 7 items
Tier 3 provides the highest qualifying discount but does not include a gift. Tier 2 is the most recent eligible tier that includes a gift.
The customer receives:
20% off from Tier 3
Gift B from Tier 2
Gift A is not added because Tier 2 contains the most recent eligible gift.
How do the Free gift application rules compare?
Using the same example in which the customer buys 7 items:
Free gift application rule | Customer receives | Why |
Include all eligible tier gifts | 20% off + Gift A + Gift B | Gifts from all previously unlocked tiers are included. |
Apply only the highest qualifying tier gift | 20% off | Only Tier 3 applies, and Tier 3 does not contain a gift. |
Apply highest tier + last eligible gift | 20% off + Gift B | Tier 3 provides the discount, while Tier 2 provides the most recent eligible gift. |
What happens when the highest qualifying tier does not include a gift?
The result depends on the selected rule:
Include all eligible tier gifts: The customer receives gifts from all earlier eligible tiers.
Apply only the highest qualifying tier gift: No gift is added because the highest qualifying tier does not include one.
Apply highest tier + last eligible gift: The gift from the most recent eligible tier that includes one is added.
If none of the tiers the customer has qualified for includes a gift, no free gift is added.
Can customers receive multiple free gifts?
Customers can receive gifts from multiple tiers only when Include all eligible tier gifts is selected.
The other two rules prevent gifts from different tiers from being combined. Each campaign tier can contain one free-gift product variant.
Which Free gift application rule should I choose?
Choose Include all eligible tier gifts when customers should receive every gift they unlock.
Choose Apply only the highest qualifying tier gift when only the highest qualifying tier should determine the customer’s rewards.
Choose Apply highest tier + last eligible gift when you want to prevent gift stacking but still provide the most recently unlocked eligible gift.
After saving the campaign, test quantities that qualify for multiple tiers. Confirm that the correct discount and free gifts are added to the cart.
